AI: Murderer or Mirror?

Before we put artificial intelligence on trial, humanity may need to take the stand.

By Deborah Ocasio

Artificial intelligence is being talked about as if it woke up one morning, stretched, grabbed a cup of coffee, and decided what kind of creature it wanted to become. It didn't. AI is technology created by human beings.

Before we pronounce the machine guilty and reach for the electric chair — pun fully intended — perhaps we should examine Exhibit A: AI did not create itself. We created it. Human beings coded it, funded it, trained it, and decided what to feed it.

“What if AI isn't merely the defendant standing before us? What if AI is the mirror sitting in the courtroom?”

Humanity has been shifting responsibility since Genesis. Adam essentially responds, "That woman You gave me..." Eve points toward the serpent. Welcome to the first public-relations crisis in human history.

Blaming AI without examining humanity is like blaming the automobile when a drunk driver causes a fatal accident.
